Anastasiya Minkova collapsed in shock when she arrived home from a trip last September to find that her husband had moved out and taken their two-year-old son. The US-Russian citizen is now fighting for custody of the child, who CNN is calling Ren to protect his identity. Benjamin Wong has found peace — at 8,530 feet. As a high school teacher in Singapore, he gets long summer breaks, but he struggles to find places to travel to that aren’t as unbearably hot as where he lives. This summer, he is camping out at a luxury mountain lodge in Yunnan, a region of southwestern China that has become more popular with tourists looking for places to escape the heat. The classic postcard images of the Chilean capital of Santiago surrounded by the snow-covered Andes in winter now seem like pictures from the past. A yearslong drought that has plagued the country has led to a shortage of snow so severe that the main ski resorts in the metropolitan area have had to suspend the use of up to 90% of their slopes, according to the Chilean Ski Resorts Association (ACESKI). And with climate change thought to be at least partially to blame, authorities warn that in the long term the region may need to find other ways to entice tourists to spend their money.
