Conservative candidate Keiko Fujimori has been declared the winner of Peru’s presidential race following a weeks-long vote count that ended with a razor-thin margin of victory in the deeply polarized South American country. The country’s electoral office confirmed Friday that Fujimori, the eldest daughter of former President Alberto Fujimori, had won the June 7 runoff vote in what was her fourth bid for the presidency after unsuccessful campaigns in 2011, 2016 and 2021. In a post on X after the official proclamation, Fujimori thanked voters for their support and said Peru was entering “a new chapter.” She pledged to lead the transition with “responsibility, humility and a profound sense of duty.”

A ferocious Russian attack on Kyiv Thursday killed at least 30 people, making it the third deadliest assault against the Ukrainian capital since the start of the war. Ukraine has endured hundreds of large-scale aerial attacks, but the assault this week was exceptionally lethal, in part because of the targets Moscow chose – residential buildings – and the weapons it used, including ballistic missiles, loitering munitions and jet-powered drones. Jet-powered drones like the Geran-4 UAV are a relatively new addition to Russia’s arsenal, having been first spotted around the start of the year.

Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke with Donald Trump on a July 4 call lasting nearly 90 minutes in which the US leader again offered to help end the Ukraine war, according to Russia’s foreign ministry. The call came ahead of a critical NATO summit in Turkey starting Tuesday that the US president plans to attend and as Russian forces stepped up efforts to take more of Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region - a key objective for the Kremlin. Ukraine meanwhile has continued to target Russian energy infrastructure.
